Transforming Death Anxiety into Wonder and Joy

Mindfulness of death, when developed and pursued, is of great fruit and great benefit. It gains a footing in the deathless, has the deathless as its final end. Therefore you should develop mindfulness of death.

Join Brad Amaronanda Hunter for the day of retreat, hosted by Dassanaya Buddhist Community.

Terror Management theory suggests that all of our fears can ultimately be traced

back to the fear of death in one of its many guises. Even the fears that appear to

have nothing to do with mortality can be seen as threat to self, or beliefs of self, or

indeed, anything whatsoever that is clung to as I, me or mine. By directly

investigating our most intimate, non-conceptual, embodied experience—in a safe

and grounded way—we can gradually open to more profound depths of wonder

and joy, while at the same time releasing the fearful energies that drive so much of

our personal and collective suffering. Through guided meditations and discussion

during this retreat day, we may begin to realize the ‘great fruit and great benefit’

that the Buddha was pointing to.
